Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Marji'uhum (مَرْجِعَهُمْ): Their return or final destination.
  • Al-Jaheem (الْجَحِيم): The blazing Fire of Hell, one of its most intense levels.

Explanation of the Verse:

After describing the punishment of the disbelievers in the preceding verses—where they are forced to eat from the tree of Zaqqum, which grows from the depths of Hell, with fruits resembling the heads of devils, and then drink a boiling, foul mixture that tears their insides—this verse reveals the final stage of their torment: "Then indeed, their return is to the Blazing Fire."

This means that after enduring the horrors of eating and drinking those repulsive substances, they are not given any respite. Instead, they are driven back into the very heart of Hellfire itself, where the most severe and everlasting punishment awaits them. They move from one torment to another, each worse than the last, with no escape and no end. The scholars explain that the Zaqqum and the boiling drink are presented to them as a preliminary punishment before they are cast into the depths of the Fire, or that these are part of the torment they experience within it—either way, they never leave the Fire, and their suffering is continuous and ever-increasing.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a stark and powerful reminder of the reality of the Hereafter—a truth that every soul will face. Imagine being trapped in a cycle of agony with no hope of relief, no moment of peace, and no chance to change your fate. This is the consequence of turning away from the mercy of Allah in this life. Yet, the door of repentance remains open right now, in this very moment. Allah, the Most Merciful, has sent us the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a guide to save us from such a fate. He calls us to His forgiveness and His Paradise, where rivers flow and joys never end. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the eternal reality. Turn back to your Lord today, and He will turn to you with mercy, wiping away your sins and granting you a place in His eternal bliss. The choice is yours—and the time to choose is now.
