Surah Sad — Verse 30

In this noble verse, Allah tells us of His immense favor upon His Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) by granting him a righteous son, Sulaiman (peace be upon him). This was not merely a gift of offspring, but a divine blessing that brought joy to Dawud’s heart and ensured the continuation of prophethood and wisdom in his lineage. Allah describes Sulaiman with the highest praise: "How excellent a servant he was!" This commendation from the Lord of the Worlds is a testament to Sulaiman’s unparalleled devotion and character. He was truly a servant of Allah in the fullest sense—obedient, grateful, and humble despite the vast kingdom and power granted to him. The verse concludes by explaining the reason for this praise: "Indeed, he was Awwāb"—meaning he constantly turned back to Allah, repenting from any shortcoming, seeking His pleasure in all affairs, and returning to Him in every moment of his life. His heart was always connected to his Creator, whether in times of ease or hardship.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the greatest honor a person can achieve is not wealth, power, or status, but being described by Allah as "a good servant." Sulaiman was given a kingdom the likes of which no one after him would possess, yet his defining quality was not his dominion—it was his constant turning back to Allah. This teaches us that no matter how busy we become with the affairs of this world, our hearts must remain anchored in obedience and remembrance of our Lord. The quality of being "Awwāb" is one that every Muslim can strive for: whenever we slip into sin, we rush back to Allah in sincere repentance; whenever we receive blessings, we return to Him in gratitude; and whenever we face trials, we turn to Him in supplication. Let us ask ourselves: are we among those who constantly return to Allah, or do we drift away when life becomes comfortable? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah loves those who turn back to Him. Make it your habit to return to Allah at every moment, and you too can earn His beautiful praise.
