Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yushraka bihi (يُشْرَكَ بِهِ): To associate partners with Allah in worship, divinity, or lordship — the gravest sin of *shirk*.
  • Ma duna dhalika (مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ): Anything less than shirk — i.e., all other sins and transgressions.
  • Liman yasha’ (لِمَن يَشَاءُ): For whom He wills — indicating Allah’s absolute wisdom and mercy in granting forgiveness.
  • Dalalan ba’eedan (ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا): Utterly far-reaching misguidance — a deviation so profound it separates the person from every path of truth and goodness.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse delivers one of the most crucial messages in the Qur’an — a message that balances immense hope with a stark warning. Allah, the Exalted, declares that He does not forgive the sin of *shirk* — associating partners with Him in worship or attributing divine qualities to anyone or anything besides Him. This is the one sin that remains unforgivable if a person dies upon it without repenting, for it violates the very essence of Allah’s oneness (*Tawhid*), which is the foundation of all faith.

However, immediately after this stern declaration, Allah opens the door of His boundless mercy: He forgives whatever is less than shirk — all other sins, whether major or minor — for whomsoever He wills. This is not a blanket guarantee for every sinner without condition, but rather a testament to Allah’s absolute sovereignty and mercy. He forgives out of His grace, and He may also hold accountable whom He wills, in perfect justice. This means no believer should ever despair of Allah’s mercy, no matter how heavy their burden of sin, as long as they have not committed shirk and they turn back to Him in sincere repentance.

The verse then concludes with a powerful warning: whoever commits shirk with Allah has strayed into a misguidance that is immensely far-reaching. Such a person has wandered so far from the truth that they have equated the Creator of the heavens and the earth with His own creation — placing a mere servant on the level of the Almighty. This is the ultimate injustice and folly, and its consequence is utter loss in this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a divine invitation to purify your heart and anchor your life on the purest foundation — the oneness of Allah. It tells you that no sin is too great to be forgiven if you abandon shirk and sincerely repent, for Allah’s mercy encompasses everything. Yet it also urges you to guard your faith fiercely, for shirk is not merely an ancient idolatry — it can creep into hearts through arrogance, love of status, or reliance on created beings instead of the Creator. Let this verse inspire you to live a life of sincere devotion, to constantly renew your *Tawhid*, and to never lose hope in Allah’s forgiveness. The door of repentance is open until the last breath — so rush to it, and you will find a Lord who is both Just and infinitely Merciful.

📜 Verse 114-118 — An-Nisa

No good is there in much of their private conversation, except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking means to the approval of Allah - then We are going to give him a great reward.
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray.
They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Satan.
Whom Allah has cursed. For he had said, "I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion.
