Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Inathan (إِنَاثًا): Female idols and false deities that the polytheists worshipped, named with feminine designations such as Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat.
- Shaytanan Maridan (شَيْطَانًا مَّرِيدًا): A rebellious, defiant devil—namely Iblis (Satan)—who has transgressed beyond the bounds of obedience to Allah and is deeply entrenched in corruption and misguidance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes the reality of what the polytheists of Makkah and others truly worshipped besides Allah. They called upon and devoted their rituals to idols and false gods—lifeless objects that could neither benefit nor harm them. These idols were given feminine names like Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat, reflecting the superstitious and baseless nature of their beliefs. Yet, in truth, their worship was not directed to these stones and statues at all; rather, they were following and obeying none other than Satan—the rebellious accursed one—who had deceived them, adorned their falsehood, and commanded them to associate partners with Allah. Satan, in his arrogance and defiance, led them away from the straight path, making their worship utterly void and worthless in the sight of Allah.
Da'wah Reflection:
How astonishing is the state of those who turn away from the Creator of the heavens and the earth—the All-Powerful, the All-Wise—only to bow before carved stones and lifeless idols, or worse, to follow the whispers of a cursed enemy! This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul: do not let Shaytan deceive you into worshipping anything other than Allah, whether it be statues, desires, wealth, status, or any false object of devotion. Allah alone is worthy of worship—He who hears every supplication, answers every call, and holds all benefit and harm in His Hands. So turn to Him sincerely, for He is the Most Merciful, ever ready to forgive and guide those who repent. Indeed, true success lies in freeing your heart from every false allegiance and submitting wholly to your Lord, the One and Only God.
