Tafsir (Explanation):
To Allah alone belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth — everything within them, between them, and beneath the soil. Nothing escapes His knowledge, power, or authority. This opening statement is a profound reminder of His absolute sovereignty, which sets the stage for the divine command that follows.
Indeed, Allah has made a solemn covenant — a binding recommendation — with the People of the Book who came before you (the Jews and Christians who received the Torah and the Gospel), and He has made the same covenant with you, O believers of the Qur'an. That covenant is simply this: "Be conscious of Allah" — fear Him, obey His commands, and stay away from what He has forbidden. This is the essence of taqwa, the very foundation of faith that unites all prophets and their followers across time. It is the first and last advice given to humanity, for it is the key to success in this life and the next.
Then Allah addresses a reality that every soul must confront: "And if you disbelieve — then indeed, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth." This is a gentle yet firm warning. Your disbelief does not diminish Allah's kingdom in the least, nor does it harm Him. The angels in the heavens and all creatures on earth are obedient to Him, glorifying Him day and night without fatigue. Your faith is for your own benefit, and your disbelief is to your own loss. Allah does not need your worship; rather, you need His mercy.
And Allah is "Ghaniyyun Hameed" — Self-Sufficient, free from any need of His creation, while being Praiseworthy in all His attributes and actions. He is worthy of all praise because His grace is endless, His wisdom is perfect, and His generosity is boundless. Even when people turn away from Him, He continues to sustain them, provide for them, and shower them with blessings — a testament to His infinite mercy and praiseworthy nature.
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful verse: The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Owner of all that exists, has personally addressed you with the same command He gave to the prophets and their followers before you. He did not leave you without guidance; He sent you a clear book and a final messenger. The door of repentance is always open, and the path to His pleasure is clear. So be among those who respond to His call with taqwa — for in doing so, you honor yourself, elevate your rank, and secure a place in His eternal paradise. And know that your Lord is Al-Ghaniyy, who needs nothing from you, yet He is Al-Hameed, who loves to be praised and who rewards those who turn to Him with the greatest of rewards.
