- "Yattabi'ūna al-shahawāt" (الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الشَّهَوَاتِ): Those who follow their lusts and desires — referring to those who prioritize their carnal appetites and worldly pleasures over divine commands.
- "Tamīlū" (تَمِيلُوا): To incline, lean, or swerve away from the straight path.
- "Maylan 'Aẓīman" (مَيْلًا عَظِيمًا): A great and profound deviation — a severe departure from truth and righteousness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah — the Most Merciful — declares His profound love and care for His servants. He says: *"And Allah desires to accept your repentance"* — meaning, He wishes to open the doors of forgiveness for you, to cleanse your sins, and to bring you back to Him no matter how far you have strayed. This is a magnificent invitation of mercy: even when you fall into error or commit shortcomings, Allah does not wish to punish you hastily; rather, He eagerly awaits your return to Him so that He may shower you with His pardon and grace.
On the other hand, the verse warns against the opposite call: *"But those who follow their lusts desire that you should deviate greatly."* These are the people who have surrendered to their base desires — the adulterers, the disbelievers, and all those who have made their appetites their god. Their ultimate aim is to pull you away from the straight path, to make you swerve from the truth, and to drag you into the same moral ruin they find themselves in. They do not merely want you to slip slightly; they want you to fall into a deep, overwhelming deviation — a complete abandonment of divine guidance.
So the verse presents a clear contrast: Allah calls you to purity, repentance, and elevation, while the followers of lust call you to corruption, sin, and destruction. The choice is yours — whose call will you answer?
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse. The Creator of the heavens and the earth — the One who has no need of your worship — is the very One who *desires* to forgive you. He does not say, "I will accept your repentance if you deserve it." Rather, He says, *"I want to forgive you."* This is the essence of His mercy: He initiates the invitation, He opens the door, and He waits for you to walk through it.
Meanwhile, the enemies of your soul — whether they be external tempters or your own unchecked desires — are actively plotting to make you fall. They are not neutral; they are relentless in their call to misguidance. So do not be deceived by those who mock religion or who beautify sin. Their goal is your destruction, even if they smile at you while doing so.
Let this verse be a source of hope and a warning at the same time. Hope, because Allah's mercy is vast and His desire to forgive you is real. Warning, because the path of lust leads only to ruin. Choose today to answer the call of your Lord — the call of repentance, purity, and eternal success. And know that when you turn to Him, He is more delighted with your return than a traveler who finds his lost camel in the desert. So hasten to Him, for He is waiting with open arms of mercy.
