Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Riyaa' (رِئَاءَ): Showing off, hypocrisy, or performing deeds to be seen and praised by people rather than for the sake of Allah.
- Qareen (قَرِينًا): A companion, associate, or inseparable friend.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty describes another category of people who are deserving of His severe punishment—those who spend their wealth only to be seen by others (riyaa'), seeking admiration, praise, and social status, while their hearts are empty of true faith in Allah and the Day of Judgment. They do not believe in Allah with sincere conviction, nor do they believe in the resurrection, the reckoning, or the reward and punishment of the Hereafter. Their spending is not an act of worship; it is a hollow performance for an audience of mortals, devoid of any spiritual value.
Allah then reveals the root cause of their misguided behavior: Satan has become their inseparable companion. It is Satan who whispers to them, beautifies their evil deeds, and drives them toward hypocrisy, stinginess, and every form of wickedness. And what an evil companion Satan is! He leads his followers straight into ruin, misery, and eternal loss, offering nothing but false promises and endless regret.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful lesson. Allah does not merely look at the outward form of your actions—He looks at your heart and your intention. A small deed done sincerely for Allah is far greater in His sight than a grand gesture performed for the applause of people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned us that the first people to be thrown into Hell on the Day of Judgment will be those who did great deeds—charity, recitation, and even fighting—but did them all for show, not for Allah.
So purify your intention! Make every act of giving, every prayer, and every good deed a private conversation between you and your Lord. Do not let Satan deceive you into chasing the fleeting praise of people, for their praise is worthless compared to the eternal reward that awaits the sincere. Allah loves those who give in secret, whose left hand does not know what their right hand has given. Such people will be shaded under His throne on the day when there is no shade but His.
And beware of the company you keep—both visible and invisible. Just as a good companion draws you closer to Allah, an evil companion, like Satan, drags you into darkness. Choose the company of the righteous, and seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, for he is indeed the worst of companions, and his end is the worst of ends. May Allah make us among the sincere, the pure-hearted, and the beloved of Him. Ameen.
