Word Meanings:

  • Naṣīb (نَصِيب): A share, portion, or allotment of something.
  • Al-Mulk (الْمُلْك): Sovereignty, dominion, or authority over a realm.
  • Naqīr (نَقِير): The tiny speck or dot on the back of a date stone (the pit of a date). It is used proverbially to denote the smallest, most insignificant thing imaginable.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses a group of people who claimed to have a share in sovereignty or divine authority, yet their actions betrayed any such claim. The question is posed rhetorically, in a tone of denial and rebuke: "Do they truly possess a share of dominion?" The implied answer is a firm "No" — they have no real authority or ownership over anything, let alone the affairs of people.

The verse then exposes their true character: even if they were granted a portion of power or wealth, they would not give people even the tiniest amount — not even as much as the minute speck on a date pit. This is a vivid illustration of their extreme miserliness, envy, and selfishness. Their hearts are so constricted that they would withhold even the most negligible benefit from others, despite claiming superiority or entitlement.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the contrast between true leadership and false claims. In Islam, authority and wealth are trusts from Allah, meant to be used for the welfare of others, not hoarded or used to deprive people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The one who is not merciful to people, Allah is not merciful to him" (Bukhari and Muslim). True honor lies in generosity, humility, and service to humanity, not in clinging to power or wealth.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. Do you hold back from giving others their due rights — whether it be kindness, help, or material support — even in the smallest measure? The believer is called to be open-handed and compassionate, for Allah loves those who give freely and care for His creation. Remember that whatever we possess is a loan from Allah, and we will be asked about how we used it. Let this verse inspire you to be generous, to remove envy from your heart, and to strive for the noble character that Islam cultivates — a character that gives even when giving is hard, and that treats every person with dignity and fairness. Indeed, the best of people are those most beneficial to others, and the greatest reward lies with Allah for those who spend in His cause and spread mercy among His servants.

📜 Verse 51-55 — An-Nisa

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, who believe in superstition and false objects of worship and say about the disbelievers, "These are better guided than the believers as to the way"?
Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses - never will you find for him a helper.
Or have they a share of dominion? Then [if that were so], they would not give the people [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.
Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.
And some among them believed in it, and some among them were averse to it. And sufficient is Hell as a blaze.
