Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Amana bihi" (آمَنَ بِهِ): Believed in him, i.e., accepted the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and affirmed its truth.
- "Saddu 'anhu" (صَدَّ عَنْهُ): Turned away from him and obstructed others from following him; refused to accept the truth and actively discouraged others from it.
- "Sa'eera" (سَعِيرًا): A blazing, fiercely burning fire — a description of Hell that emphasizes its intense heat and torment.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the discussion about those who were given knowledge from the People of the Book. It tells us that when the truth of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) message reached them, they split into two distinct groups with opposite responses.
The first group — such as Abdullah ibn Salam and his companions — believed sincerely in the Prophet and embraced his message with open hearts. They recognized him as the fulfillment of the prophecies in their scriptures and submitted to Allah's final revelation. Their faith was genuine, and they acted upon what they learned.
The second group, however, turned away in arrogance and stubbornness. Not only did they reject the truth themselves, but they also actively blocked others from reaching it. They used their knowledge not as a light to guide them, but as a weapon to mislead and prevent people from following the Prophet.
Then comes the powerful and sobering conclusion: "And sufficient is Hell as a blazing fire." This is a direct warning to those who reject and obstruct the truth. The punishment of Hellfire is more than enough to repay their arrogance and defiance. No other punishment is needed — the scorching flames of Jahannam await those who knowingly turn away from Allah's guidance.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of us. Knowledge is a trust from Allah — it can either be a means of salvation or a source of destruction. The People of the Book had the truth in their scriptures, yet many chose to reject it when it came in its final form. How tragic it is when one possesses the light and still chooses darkness!
Today, you have been given the greatest gift — the Quran and the authentic Sunnah. The question is: which group will you belong to? Will you be among those who believe, embrace, and act upon this guidance? Or will you be among those who turn away and prevent others from the path of Allah?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came as a mercy to all of mankind. His message is not limited to a particular people or era — it is for every soul until the end of time. Do not let pride, habit, or worldly desires keep you from the truth. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Come to the light before the fire becomes your only reality.
Remember: Hell is not a distant threat — it is a blazing reality for those who reject the truth. But Paradise is equally real, with its rivers of milk and honey, its gardens beneath which rivers flow, and the pleasure of Allah's countenance. The choice is yours, and this very moment is your opportunity.
