Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- سَأَلَهَا (sa'alaha): Asked about it — the pronoun refers to the kind of questions mentioned in the preceding verses, i.e., asking about matters that were not obligatory or that were not revealed.
- قَوْمٌ مِّن قَبْلِكُمْ (qawmun min qablikum): A people before you — referring to past nations who questioned their prophets.
- أَصْبَحُوا بِهَا كَافِرِينَ (asbahu biha kafirin): They became disbelievers in it — meaning they rejected what they were commanded to do after having asked about it, and thus fell into disbelief.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a profound warning to the believers. Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, a people before you asked about such matters" — meaning they posed questions to their prophets about things that were not yet legislated or that were left unspecified. When they were then commanded to fulfill what they had asked about, they refused and rejected it. Consequently, they became disbelievers because of their arrogance and defiance.
The reference here includes nations like Thamud, who asked Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) for a miracle — a she-camel — and when it was granted and they were commanded to treat it with respect, they killed it and were destroyed. Similarly, the disciples of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) asked for a table spread from heaven; when it descended and they were commanded to believe and be grateful, some of them disbelieved and were punished.
The lesson is clear: asking questions is not inherently wrong, but asking out of stubbornness, mockery, or with the intention of finding excuses to reject the truth is blameworthy. When Allah reveals a command, the believer's duty is to hear and obey — not to question excessively or seek loopholes.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message of humility before Allah's commands. Islam is a religion of submission — the very word "Islam" means peaceful surrender to the will of Allah. When Allah or His Messenger (peace be upon him) command something, the heart of a true believer responds with "We hear and we obey" (سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا).
Do not let curiosity or arrogance lead you to ask about matters that Allah has not made obligatory, for the religion is complete and perfect. Allah says: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion" (Al-Ma'idah 5:3).
Instead, focus on what has been clearly commanded: the five daily prayers, fasting, charity, pilgrimage, and the beautiful character of the Prophet (peace be upon him). These are sufficient for your salvation and success. Be among those who hasten to obedience, not those who hesitate and question. For the nations before you were destroyed not because they asked, but because when the answer came, they turned away in disbelief.
Embrace the beauty of Islam with an open heart, and let your questions be for the sake of understanding what is already revealed — not for testing or challenging. Allah loves those who seek knowledge with sincerity, and He guides to Himself those who turn to Him with humility.
