Word Meanings:
- أَمْ (Am): Here it means "Or" — used for rebuke and questioning, implying "Is he not aware?"
- يُنَبَّأْ (Yunabba’): Informed or told of news.
- صُحُفِ مُوسَى (Suhufi Musa): The Scriptures/Scrolls of Moses — referring to the Torah and its divine revelations.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes in a powerful sequence of rhetorical questions aimed at those who deny the truth and fabricate lies against Allah. The meaning is: "Or has he not been informed of what is in the Scriptures of Moses?" — i.e., is this person who claims falsehood and turns away from the truth completely unaware of the divine commandments and warnings that were revealed in the earlier heavenly books, especially the Torah given to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him)?
The verse rebukes the disbeliever who invents lies about Allah, asking: Has he not heard what was revealed to Moses? Does he not know that every soul shall be held accountable for its deeds, that no bearer of burdens will bear another's burden, and that human beings will only receive what they strive for? These are fundamental truths that were already established in the earlier scriptures, and they align perfectly with what is being revealed in the Qur'an.
The verse also serves as a reminder that the message of Islam is not new or isolated — it is a continuation and confirmation of the same divine truth that was sent down to all prophets, from Moses to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). The Torah itself contained the core principles of faith, accountability, and the consequences of one's actions.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect: How can anyone ignore such clear divine guidance that has been consistently revealed across all ages? The consistency of the divine message across different prophets and scriptures is itself a proof of its truth. The Qur'an challenges you to open your heart, examine the evidence, and recognize that this is the same truth that was revealed to Moses, Abraham, and all the prophets before.
If you are sincere in your search for truth, you will find that Islam does not ask you to abandon reason — it calls you to use it. The scriptures of old and the Qur'an all point to one reality: that Allah is One, that accountability is certain, and that success lies in purifying one's soul and striving in the path of righteousness. Let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder that the truth has always been there — in every era, in every scripture — and it is now before you in its final and complete form. Embrace it before the day comes when no soul will be able to help another, and when only one's own deeds will speak.
