Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ghayb (الْغَيْبِ): The unseen, that which is hidden from human perception and knowledge — including matters of the future, the Hereafter, and the secrets of the universe that only Allah knows.
- Yarā (يَرَىٰ): He sees — meaning he perceives it with his own eyes, witnessing it directly and clearly.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a rhetorical, rebuking question to a specific person — one who had cut off his charity and withheld his wealth from those in need. The question is: Does this person possess knowledge of the unseen, such that he can see with certainty that his wealth will run out if he spends it? Does he have certain knowledge that giving charity will cause him to become poor, so he clings tightly to his money and refuses to do good?
The answer, of course, is an emphatic "No!" He does not know the unseen, nor can he see what the future holds. His withholding of charity is not based on knowledge or insight — it is purely from stinginess, miserliness, and a lack of trust in Allah's promises of provision and reward. He is not acting on certainty; he is acting on base desires and worldly fear.
The verse also carries a deeper implication: if he truly had knowledge of the unseen, he would know that spending in the way of Allah never decreases wealth — rather, it increases it, purifies it, and brings blessings beyond measure. He would know that what he withholds will not protect him from poverty, and what he gives will not make him poor.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: we do not possess knowledge of the unseen — that belongs exclusively to Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Seeing. When we hold back from giving charity, from helping others, from doing good — fearing poverty or loss — we are acting as if we know what the future holds. But we do not. We are like a person who closes his eyes and claims to see.
How beautiful is the way of Islam! It calls us to trust in Allah, to spend generously, and to believe with certainty that whatever we give in His cause is never lost. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." So let us open our hearts, trust in our Lord, and race toward generosity — for the One who provides for us from where we do not expect is the same One who has promised to replace every penny we spend in His way with something far better.
Let this verse be a reminder to us all: we are not the owners of our wealth — we are merely trustees. And the true owner, Allah, has commanded us to spend and has guaranteed the reward. So why would we hold back, as if we know better than the All-Knowing? May Allah make us among those who spend with trust, give with sincerity, and rely upon Him in all matters.
