Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ (Fa-tawalla 'anhum): Turn away from them, leave them alone, and do not grieve over their rejection.
- يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ (Yad'u al-dā'i): The caller will call — this refers to the angel Israfil (peace be upon him) who will blow the Trumpet (Sur) on the Day of Resurrection.
- شَيْءٍ نُكُرٍ (Shay'in nukur): A dreadful, horrific matter — something so terrible and unfamiliar that souls have never witnessed its like before.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had delivered the message with utmost sincerity and patience, and after the disbelievers persisted in their stubborn denial and mockery, Allah consoled His Messenger with a clear directive: *"Turn away from them."* This is not a command of abandonment born of frustration, but rather a profound reassurance — a release from the heavy burden of grief that the Prophet felt for a people who refused to believe. He was told: Do not let your soul waste away in sorrow over them, for their affair is with Us.
Then comes the awe-inspiring description of what awaits them: *"On the Day when the Caller calls to a dreadful thing."* This is the day when Israfil (peace be upon him) will blow the Trumpet at Allah's command, summoning all of creation to a matter of immense terror and magnitude — the Day of Judgment. It is a call to something so horrific that no soul has ever encountered its equal. The hearts will leap to the throats, the eyes will stare in bewilderment, and every person will be consumed by the gravity of that moment. The word *nukur* (dreadful) emphasizes that this event is entirely beyond human imagination — unprecedented in its terror, unlike anything experienced in the life of this world.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the rejection of truth by some should never shake our resolve or cause us despair. The Prophet himself, the most beloved of creation to Allah, was told to turn away from those who refused — not out of defeat, but because the ultimate reckoning belongs to Allah alone. The Day is coming when every soul will face the reality of its deeds, and no amount of worldly arrogance or denial will shield anyone from that call.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to ponder a fundamental truth: this worldly life, with all its distractions and temporary pleasures, is but a fleeting moment. The Day when the Caller calls is certain — it is not a myth or a distant possibility, but an inevitable reality that will overtake every single one of us. The question is not *whether* that Day will come, but *how* we will meet it. Will we be among those who prepared for it with faith and righteous deeds, or among those who turned away and busied themselves with the vanities of this world?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was told to turn away from the disbelievers — but you, dear reader, are being called today to turn *towards* your Lord. The door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, and every moment before that dreadful Day is an opportunity to secure your place among the successful. Do not let the mockery of others or the temptations of this world distract you from what truly matters. Prepare for the Day when the Caller calls — for on that Day, no wealth, no status, and no excuse will avail anyone except a sound heart that turned to its Creator in this life.
Embrace the beauty of Islam today, and let the certainty of that Day transform your life into one of purpose, devotion, and hope in the infinite mercy of Allah.
