Surah Al-Qamar — Verse 8

Word Meanings:

• مُّهْطِعِينَ (Muh'ti'eena): Hastening quickly with their necks stretched forward, looking intently without blinking — a state of extreme urgency and fear.
• إِلَى الدَّاعِ (Ila ad-Da'i): To the caller — meaning the Angel Israfeel (peace be upon him) when he blows the Trumpet (Sur) calling all of creation to the Day of Resurrection.
• يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ (Yawmun 'Asir): A difficult, harsh, and severe day — full of hardship and overwhelming terrors.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that tremendous Day, the disbelievers will rise from their graves in a state of utter humiliation and terror. Their eyes will be cast down in disgrace, and they will rush forth like scattered locusts swarming in every direction — driven by an irresistible force toward the caller. They will not walk with dignity or composure; rather, they will sprint with their necks outstretched, unable to pause or turn away, drawn helplessly to the appointed gathering.

As they witness the horrors unfolding around them — the sky splitting, the mountains crumbling, the earth shaking, and the angels surrounding them — the disbelievers will finally utter words that reveal their despair: "This is a difficult day!" Indeed, it is a day of unprecedented hardship, where every soul will be consumed by its own concerns, and no intercession will avail without Allah's permission.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the Day of Judgment is real and inevitable. No matter how long a person lives in heedlessness, that Day will surely come. The disbelievers who once mocked the truth and denied the resurrection will find themselves running in terror toward the very reality they rejected.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine that moment — when every excuse vanishes, every veil is lifted, and the truth becomes undeniable. The One who created you from nothing and sustained you throughout your life will call you to account. Will you be among those who rush forward in peace and security, having prepared for that Day with faith and good deeds? Or will you be among those who rush forward in terror, realizing only then that they have nothing to present?

The Quran does not present these scenes to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken our hearts while we still have time. Today, you have the opportunity to turn to your Lord, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life pleasing to Him. The door of repentance is open, and His mercy encompasses all things. Do not wait until that difficult Day when no second chance will be given. Respond to the call of faith now, and you will find peace in this life and safety on that Day.
