Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tatghaw (تَطْغَوْا): To transgress, exceed the limits, or act unjustly.
  • Al-Mīzān (الْمِيزَان): The scale or balance, referring to weighing and measuring in transactions.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) commands His servants to uphold justice and fairness in all their dealings, particularly in matters of weighing and measuring. The verse establishes that the very purpose of setting up the balance—whether literal scales for goods or the figurative balance of justice in all affairs—is to prevent transgression and wrongdoing. Allah warns against exceeding the limits of fairness, such as cheating, fraud, or giving short measure when dealing with others. This divine instruction is a cornerstone of Islamic ethics, emphasizing that honesty in trade and transactions is not merely a worldly virtue but an act of worship that pleases Allah.

The verse calls upon all people, believers and non-believers alike, to reflect on the perfection of Allah’s creation—how He set the heavens and the earth in perfect balance—and to mirror that balance in their own conduct. Just as the universe operates on precise equilibrium, human societies must be built on justice and equity. When a person cheats in weighing or measuring, they disrupt this divine harmony and sow corruption in society. Conversely, when they deal honestly, they contribute to a just and blessed community.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder that Islam is a complete way of life, caring for even the smallest details of daily transactions. It teaches us that our faith is not confined to the mosque or prayer mat; it extends to the marketplace, our workplaces, and every interaction we have. Imagine the profound impact if every Muslim, and indeed every human being, took this command to heart—how much poverty, conflict, and injustice would be eradicated! The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs" (Tirmidhi). So, let this verse inspire you to be a person of integrity, knowing that your honesty in the scales of this world will be weighed in your favor on the Day when every deed will be measured with perfect justice. Embrace this divine guidance, and you will find peace in your heart, prosperity in your livelihood, and the love of Allah in your life.
