Word Meanings:
- Tumnūn (تُمْنُونَ): The seminal fluid that is emitted and deposited into the wombs of women. It is derived from the root *manā* (مَنَى), meaning to pour or emit.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, turns the attention of humanity to one of the most profound and intimate signs of His power—the very beginning of human life. He asks: "Have you considered the semen that you emit?" That fluid which is discharged during intercourse and settles in the wombs of women. It is a humble drop, seemingly insignificant, yet from it the entire human being—with all its complexity, senses, intellect, and soul—is formed.
The question is rhetorical and piercing: Do you create that drop into a living, breathing human being? Do you shape its bones, its flesh, its eyes, its ears, and its heart? Or is it Allah, the Creator of all things, who does so? The answer is self-evident: no human has any hand in the creation of himself or his offspring. The power lies solely with Allah, the Most High, who transforms a mere drop into a perfect creation.
This verse is a call to reflect on the miracle of human reproduction—a process so familiar that we often overlook its astonishing nature. Every person who reads this was once a tiny drop, unnoticed and powerless. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, nurtured that drop through stages until it became a fully formed human being. This is not a matter of chance or nature acting on its own; it is the direct act of the Almighty, who says to a thing, "Be," and it is.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and ponder: your very existence—your eyes that read these words, your heart that beats without your command, your mind that thinks and questions—all of it began from something you cannot even see with the naked eye. If you cannot create even a single cell of your own body, then who deserves your gratitude, your worship, and your obedience? It is Allah alone—the One who created you, sustains you, and will one day resurrect you. This reflection is not merely intellectual; it is an invitation to let your heart awaken to the reality of your Creator. When you realize how helpless you are at the very start of your existence, you will naturally turn to the One who is All-Powerful, All-Wise, and All-Merciful. He did not create you for nothing; He created you to know Him, to worship Him, and to attain His eternal pleasure. So look at the beginning of your life, and let it guide you to the purpose of your life.
