Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Those whom We gave the Book" — refers to the Jews who received the Torah and the Christians who received the Gospel.
- "They recognize him" — they know Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through his attributes and descriptions recorded in their scriptures.
- "As they recognize their own sons" — a comparison indicating absolute, unmistakable certainty, just as a father knows his own child among a crowd of other children.
- "Those who have lost their own souls" — they have caused their own ruin and deprivation by rejecting the truth, thereby forfeiting eternal success.
- "So they do not believe" — despite their certain knowledge, they refuse to accept faith due to arrogance and worldly desires.
The Interpretation:
The verse addresses the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians — who were given the Torah and the Gospel. They knew Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with complete certainty, just as a father knows his own son. His name, his lineage, his character, and his mission were clearly described in their holy books. There was no ambiguity for them; the signs were as clear as daylight. Yet, despite this undeniable recognition, they chose to follow their whims and desires, turning away from the truth. In doing so, they wronged none but themselves — they lost their souls to ruin and deprived themselves of the immense blessing of faith. Their disbelief was not born of ignorance, but of stubbornness and a love for worldly status, which led them to reject the final Messenger.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a profound reminder that knowledge alone is not enough — what matters is acting upon it. How many people today know the truth but turn away from it due to pride, habit, or fear of losing something worldly? The People of the Book had every reason to believe, yet they hesitated and lost everything. Let this be a lesson for us all: when the truth becomes clear to your heart, do not delay your response. Embrace it with sincerity, for the one who guided those before us is the same Merciful Lord who calls us today. The door of repentance is open, and the reward of faith is greater than anything this world can offer. Do not let your soul be among those who lose themselves — for the greatest loss is to know the truth and still walk away from it.
