Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- بَغْتَةً (Baghtatan): Suddenly, unexpectedly, without any prior warning or sign.
- جَهْرَةً (Jahratan): Openly, visibly, in plain sight, while you are fully aware and witnessing it with your own eyes.
- الظَّالِمُونَ (Adh-Dhalimun): The wrongdoers, those who transgress the limits set by Allah by committing shirk (associating partners with Him) and denying His messengers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to these disbelievers who persist in their arrogance and rejection of the truth: "Tell me honestly — if Allah's punishment were to descend upon you suddenly, catching you completely off guard while you are heedless and unaware, or if it were to come upon you openly and visibly, while you watch it approach with your own eyes — in either case, who would be destroyed by it?" The answer is clear and undeniable: none would be destroyed except the wrongdoers — those who have transgressed all bounds by worshipping other than Allah, by rejecting His messengers, and by persisting in their disbelief and oppression.
This is not a threat of random destruction, but a declaration of divine justice. Allah does not punish the innocent; His punishment falls only upon those who have earned it through their own stubborn wrongdoing. The verse carries a profound reassurance for the believers: even when calamity strikes, the righteous are protected from the ultimate destruction of Allah's wrath. At the same time, it serves as a powerful warning to the disbelievers — that their fate is sealed unless they turn back to their Lord in repentance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every soul to pause and reflect: where do we stand in this equation? Are we among the wrongdoers who will face the consequences of their actions, or are we among the righteous who are shielded by Allah's mercy? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy surpasses His wrath. Do not wait for the punishment to come suddenly or openly — hasten to return to your Creator, for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. The One who warns you of His punishment is the same One who invites you to His forgiveness. Seize this moment before it is too late, and let your heart turn to Him in sincerity and devotion.
