Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Hudā (هُدَى): Guidance, direction, and the divine ability to lead someone to the truth.
- Yahdī (يَهْدِي): He guides; it signifies the act of directing someone towards the right path.
- Ashrakū (أَشْرَكُوا): They associated partners with Allah (i.e., committed shirk/polytheism).
- Ḥabiṭa (حَبِطَ): To become null, void, or wasted; to lose all value and reward.
- Mā kānū yaʿmalūn (مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ): What they used to do; referring to their righteous deeds and good actions.
The Interpretation:
This verse refers to the great prophets and messengers mentioned in the preceding verses—those whom Allah chose, guided, and honored with His mercy and revelation. The phrase “That is the guidance of Allah” points to the pure faith and righteous conduct they were upon. It is not something they achieved by their own effort alone, but a gift and favor from Allah, who grants this guidance to whomever He wills from among His servants. He is the One who opens the hearts of His chosen people to the truth, and He alone deserves all praise for this blessing.
Then comes a profound and sobering statement: “If they had associated partners with Allah, all their deeds would have been nullified.” This is said as a hypothetical condition—even for the most noble of prophets—to emphasize the absolute severity of shirk (associating partners with Allah). If even the prophets, with their immense status and perfect worship, would have lost all their deeds due to shirk, then how much more so for the rest of humanity? This teaches us that the foundation of all accepted deeds is pure monotheism (Tawḥīd). No matter how much good a person does—praying, fasting, giving charity, or striving in the path of Allah—if it is mixed with shirk, it becomes worthless in the sight of Allah. The reward is completely erased, and the person is left with nothing.
This verse is a clear call to every believer to purify their faith and to constantly check their hearts. It reminds us that our deeds are only as valuable as the sincerity of our intention and the purity of our belief in Allah alone. It also serves as a warning against the subtle forms of shirk, such as showing off (riyāʾ) or seeking the praise of people, for these can also diminish or nullify our good deeds.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful reminder of Allah’s immense mercy and justice. He does not need our deeds; rather, it is we who need His acceptance. The fact that He has made it so easy for us to earn His pleasure—by simply believing in Him alone and worshipping Him sincerely—is a sign of His infinite kindness. Imagine how easy it is to be saved: just hold onto the rope of Tawḥīd, and your entire life becomes a source of reward. But if you let go of that rope, everything falls apart. So hold fast to your faith, purify your heart, and never despair of Allah’s mercy. He is always ready to guide those who sincerely seek Him, and He never lets a single good deed go to waste—provided it is built upon the solid foundation of pure monotheism. Let this verse inspire you to renew your commitment to Allah today, and to make every action you do a means of drawing closer to Him.
