Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah (آيَةٍ): A sign, miracle, or clear proof that demonstrates the truth of a prophetic claim.
- Ṣādiqīn (الصَّادِقِينَ): The truthful ones — those whose statements are confirmed by evidence and reality.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Here we witness a pivotal moment in the encounter between Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and Pharaoh — the tyrant of Egypt. Pharaoh, in his arrogance and defiance, addresses Musa with a challenge laced with skepticism and mockery: *"If you have truly brought a sign, then produce it — if you are indeed among the truthful."*
Pharaoh's words reveal his hardened heart. He does not say, "If you are truthful, show me the sign so I may believe." Rather, his tone is one of dismissal and haughty disbelief. He frames the request as a test of Musa's credibility, as if Musa were an imposter making empty claims. Yet, hidden within this challenge is a profound truth: Pharaoh was demanding evidence, and Allah would soon grant Musa the most magnificent signs — the staff transforming into a serpent and the radiant white hand — signs that would leave even the most obstinate observer without excuse.
This verse teaches us several timeless lessons:
- Truth is not afraid of scrutiny. Musa (peace be upon him) did not hesitate or waver when challenged. A true believer welcomes the opportunity to present evidence for the truth, because the truth stands firm on its own. The Qur'an repeatedly invites humanity to reflect, reason, and seek proof — because Islam is built on certainty, not blind following.
- The arrogance of power does not shield one from accountability. Pharaoh, despite his immense authority and wealth, was ultimately powerless before the signs of Allah. No matter how mighty a person may be in this world, they will one day stand before the Creator — and no amount of worldly dominion will avail them then.
- Allah responds to sincere seekers. Notice how the very next verses show Musa (peace be upon him) casting his staff and it becoming a living serpent, and drawing forth his hand glowing white — clear, undeniable miracles. Allah never abandons His messengers, and He never abandons those who sincerely seek the truth. If you approach the Qur'an with an open heart, you will find within it signs that speak directly to your soul.
Dear reader, Pharaoh asked for a sign while his heart was closed. But you — you have been given the greatest sign of all: this glorious Qur'an, preserved for over 1,400 years, challenging humanity to produce anything like it, and standing as a living miracle until the end of time. Open your heart to it, and you will find that it addresses you personally, guiding you to the straight path that leads to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
