Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wa amtarna" (وَأَمْطَرْنَا): We sent down upon them a rain — here referring to a rain of stones, not water.
- "Mataran" (مَّطَرًا): A rain; in this context, it was a punishment from above, stones of baked clay.
- "Fa-nthur" (فَانظُرْ): So look, observe, and reflect — an invitation to ponder deeply.
- "Aqibat" (عَاقِبَةُ): The final outcome or end result.
- "Al-Mujrimin" (الْمُجْرِمِينَ): The criminals, the sinners, those who persisted in transgression and disbelief.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the people of Lut (Lot) rejected his message, persisted in their abominable sins, and even threatened to expel him from their land, Allah’s punishment descended upon them with overwhelming force. He sent down upon them a rain unlike any other — a rain of stones from the sky, striking them as a sign of divine wrath. Their entire land was turned upside down, the highest parts brought low, and the whole community was destroyed in a single moment of terror.
This was not merely a natural disaster; it was a deliberate, divine act of justice. The stones rained upon them were made of baked clay, each one marked by Allah’s decree, and none could escape. The punishment was comprehensive — no corner of their wicked society was spared. Their crime was not a minor offense; they had corrupted themselves and spread immorality, defying the natural order that Allah had established, and they had mocked the warnings of His prophet.
Then Allah turns to His Messenger and to all who read this account: "So look — how was the end of the criminals?" This is not just a historical observation; it is a call to reflect. The fate of the Mujrimin — those who knowingly and persistently engage in sin — is always destruction, whether in this world or the Hereafter. Their power, their wealth, their numbers — none of it could protect them when Allah’s decree arrived.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. It reminds us that Allah’s justice is certain, and that no sin is hidden from Him. But it also opens the door of hope: the people of Lut were destroyed because they refused to repent and continued in their transgression despite clear warnings. For us, the door of repentance remains open until the moment of death. If you find yourself falling into sin, do not despair — turn back to Allah, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving. The same Allah who punished the criminals is the One who welcomes His servants with open arms when they return to Him.
Let this verse be a wake-up call: observe the world around you, see how nations and individuals who spread corruption and defy Allah’s commands eventually face ruin. And let it also be a source of comfort for the believers — that no matter how long injustice seems to prevail, the final victory belongs to the righteous, and the end of the criminals is always loss. So hold firmly to the path of Allah, and never envy the temporary pleasures of those who transgress, for their end is near, while the believers’ reward is everlasting.
