Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nukadhdhibu – We used to deny and reject.
- Yawm al-Din – The Day of Recompense and Judgment, the Day when all deeds are accounted for and every soul is repaid for what it has earned.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, the people of Hell are describing the reasons that led them to their dreadful end. Among the sins they confess to is that they used to deny the Day of Judgment — the Day when Allah will resurrect all of creation, gather them before Him, and hold them accountable for every action, whether great or small, hidden or public. They did not merely doubt it; they actively rejected it, mocked its mention, and lived their lives as if it would never come. This denial was not a harmless belief — it was the root that allowed them to neglect prayer, withhold charity, and indulge in idle talk with those who were lost in falsehood. Their hearts became hardened, their consciences silenced, and their desires became their masters. They lived carelessly, chasing the fleeting pleasures of this world, until death overtook them while they were still in that state of denial and transgression — and then the reality they had rejected became undeniable, but too late for repentance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear brother, dear sister — ponder this verse deeply. The people of Hell were not asked about their wealth, their status, or their lineage. They were asked about the most fundamental matters: their prayer, their charity, their speech, and their belief in the Hereafter. The denial of the Day of Judgment is not merely an intellectual position; it is a poison that corrupts the heart and leads a person to live without purpose, without accountability, and without hope. But you, by the mercy of Allah, have been guided to the truth. You know that this life is a test, and that the Day of Judgment is real — a day when every soul will find what it has done, good or evil, presented before it. So let this knowledge transform you. Let it make you steadfast in prayer, generous in charity, and careful in your words. Let it fill your heart with hope in Allah’s mercy and fear of His justice. For the believer who lives with the Hereafter in mind is never lost — they are always moving toward a goal that is eternal, a success that never fades. May Allah make us among those who believe in the Day of Din, who prepare for it with righteous deeds, and who are saved from the fire by His grace. Ameen.
