Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • يُنَبَّأُ (Yunabba'u): He will be informed/told with certainty.
  • بِمَا قَدَّمَ (Bimā qaddama): With what he has sent forth (his deeds done during his lifetime).
  • وَأَخَّرَ (Wa akhkhar): And what he left behind (deeds he delayed, omitted, or whose effects continued after his death).

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day—the Day of Resurrection—every human being will be fully and clearly informed of all that they have done. Nothing will be hidden, forgotten, or overlooked. They will be told of the good deeds they performed in their worldly life, and the evil deeds they committed. They will also be told of the deeds they delayed or failed to perform—the acts of obedience they postponed until it was too late, and the sins they put off repenting from. Furthermore, they will be shown the lasting impact of their actions: the good examples they set that others followed, and the harmful legacies they left behind, both of which continue to weigh in their scale of deeds even after their death.

This is a moment of absolute accountability, where the veil of forgetfulness is lifted, and every soul confronts the complete record of its choices. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that whoever sets a good example in Islam will receive its reward and the reward of all who follow it until the Day of Judgment, while whoever sets a bad example bears its sin and the sins of those who follow it. Thus, what a person "sent forth" includes their direct deeds, and what they "left behind" includes the ongoing consequences of their influence.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a profound call to self-awareness and intentional living. It reminds us that we are not merely living for the moment—every action, every word, and every example we set is being recorded and will be presented to us with stunning clarity. Imagine standing before your Lord, seeing every opportunity for good you seized and every one you neglected. This knowledge should fill our hearts with both awe and hope: awe of the precision of divine justice, and hope in the mercy of a Lord who informs us now, before that Day, so we can still change our course. Let this verse inspire you to be someone who sends forth goodness, who hastens to obedience, and who leaves behind a legacy of light—so that when you are told of what you sent forth and left behind, it will be a source of joy, not regret.
