Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا (Kulū wa-shrabū): "Eat and drink" — a direct, gracious command from Allah to the believers, inviting them to enjoy the blessings of Paradise.
- هَنِيئًا (Hanī’an): "In wholesome delight" — meaning food and drink that are pure, free from any harm, sickness, discomfort, or aftereffects; a state of complete, untainted pleasure.
- بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ (Bimā kuntum ta‘malūn): "In return for what you used to do" — referring to the righteous deeds performed in the worldly life out of obedience to Allah.
The Interpretation:
On the Day of Resurrection, when the righteous who feared their Lord in the worldly life—those who carefully avoided His punishment by fulfilling His commands and abstaining from His prohibitions—are admitted into Paradise, they will find themselves beneath the ample shade of lush trees, beside flowing springs of water, and amidst abundant fruits that satisfy every desire of their souls. There, they will be honored with a divine address: "Eat and drink in wholesome delight, with complete pleasure and no trace of harm, sickness, or regret—this is the reward for what you used to do in the world." Their deeds of faith, patience, charity, prayer, and steadfastness in obedience have been transformed by Allah’s boundless mercy into this eternal, exquisite recompense. Indeed, Allah, the Most Generous, rewards those who excel in goodness and devotion with a reward beyond measure, for He never lets the effort of any doer of good go to waste. As for those who denied the Day of Judgment and its realities—both the bliss and the torment—their fate is utter ruin and severe punishment on that momentous Day.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the beauty of this divine invitation! Allah, the Lord of all worlds, does not address His servants in Paradise with harshness or detachment, but with warmth and honor: "Eat and drink in wholesome delight." This is the fruit of a life lived in conscious awareness of Him—a life where every prayer, every act of kindness, every moment of patience in the face of trials was sown as a seed for this eternal harvest. The Qur’an teaches us that Paradise is not a mere fantasy; it is a reality prepared for those who strive. So, let this verse ignite in your heart a longing for that everlasting bliss. Every good deed you perform today—no matter how small—is an investment in a joy that never fades, a peace that never breaks, and a pleasure that is utterly pure. Embrace the path of obedience, and know that your Lord’s reward is far greater than anything you can imagine. Will you not answer His call and strive for that blessed abode?
