Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sami'nā (سَمِعْنَا): "We have heard" — a claim of listening with the ears.
- Lā yasma'ūn (لَا يَسْمَعُونَ): "They do not hear" — meaning they do not listen with attentive, believing hearts; they lack true comprehension and acceptance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, do not be like those who merely utter the words "We have heard" with their tongues while their hearts are closed to the message. This refers to the hypocrites and polytheists who, when the verses of Allah were recited to them, would say, "We have heard with our ears," yet they did not truly listen — for they neither reflected upon what was recited, nor did they seek to understand it, nor did it move their hearts to accept the truth. Their hearing was only a physical act, devoid of any spiritual engagement or sincere intention to follow. They heard the words but did not hear with the ears of their hearts, which are the ears that truly benefit from guidance. Such people are like those who pass by a blazing fire but claim to have seen its light while remaining in utter darkness — their claim is empty, and their hearing brings them no benefit.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, Allah is teaching you a profound lesson here: the value of hearing lies not in the sound reaching your ears, but in the heart's response to that sound. When the Qur'an is recited, do not let your heart be absent — for the Qur'an is a living conversation between you and your Lord. Every verse is an invitation to draw closer to Him, a remedy for your soul, and a light for your path. If you hear it without reflecting, you lose the greatest treasure. So, when you listen to the Book of Allah, listen with full presence of mind and heart, let its verses touch your soul, and act upon what you learn. For the one who truly hears is not the one who says "we heard," but the one whose life changes because of what he heard. Be among those who hear and obey, not among those who hear and turn away — for the latter will regret it on the Day when nothing can be undone. May Allah make us among those who listen to the Word and follow the best of it.
