Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shaqaqnā (شَقَقْنَا): We split open or cleft asunder.
- Al-Arḍ (الْأَرْضَ): The earth, the ground.
- Shaqqā (شَقًّا): A splitting, a cleaving—emphasizing the action itself.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After mentioning the pouring of abundant rain from the clouds, Allah continues His chain of favors by pointing to the next stage in the miracle of food production: the splitting open of the earth. This is not a mere superficial crack, but a profound, deliberate rending of the soil’s surface—a divine act that allows the buried seeds to break through their dark prisons and emerge into the light. The repetition of the verbal noun (shaqqā) intensifies the meaning, stressing the perfection and completeness of this act.
When the rain saturates the ground, the earth responds by yielding its hidden treasures: the tender shoots of countless plants, grains, fruits, and herbs. This "splitting" is both physical and symbolic—it demonstrates Allah’s absolute power over the lifeless crust of the earth, transforming it into a vibrant, life-giving garden. Every time you see a green seedling push through cracked soil, you are witnessing a living sign of the Resurrection. The same Creator who splits the earth for a tiny seed will split the graves on the Day of Judgment to bring forth the dead. This verse invites you to reflect: if Allah can bring life from a hard, dry clod of dirt, then nothing is impossible for Him.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look at the food on your plate. Behind every grain, every fruit, every sip of water, lies a series of divine miracles—rain from the sky, earth splitting open, and life sprouting forth. This is not random nature; this is the loving provision of your Lord, who knows exactly what you need. Let this verse fill your heart with gratitude and awe. When you eat, remember the One who split the earth for you, and let that remembrance turn your meal into an act of worship. And if you ever doubt Allah’s power to resurrect you, just look at the cracked earth in spring—it is a promise already fulfilled, a testimony that the One who gives life to the dead soil will surely give life to the dead bones.
