Word Meanings:
- وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ – "And what makes you know?" – a rhetorical question expressing that the person addressed has no way of knowing the unseen outcome or the true state of another's heart.
- لَعَلَّهُ – "Perhaps" or "maybe" – indicating hope and possibility.
- يَزَّكَّى – "He purifies himself" – derived from *zakāt* (purification), meaning to cleanse oneself from sins, faults, and spiritual impurities, or to grow in righteousness and good deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse gently but powerfully corrects the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding his interaction with a blind companion, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet had frowned and turned away when Abdullah interrupted his conversation with some leaders of Quraysh, hoping to guide them to Islam. Allah then revealed this verse, saying: "And what makes you know – perhaps he [i.e., Abdullah] would purify himself?"
The meaning is: O Prophet, what knowledge do you have that would make you certain about the outcome of this man's soul? You cannot see what is hidden in his heart. Perhaps this blind man, by listening to your words and asking his questions, would cleanse his soul from sins, increase in faith, and attain spiritual growth and moral elevation. His sincere seeking of guidance might be far more valuable in Allah's sight than your conversation with those wealthy and influential people, whose hearts remained hard and unreceptive.
The verse teaches a profound lesson: true value lies not in worldly status or wealth, but in the purity of the heart and the earnest desire for guidance. The one who comes to you seeking truth, even if poor and humble, may be more deserving of your attention than those who turn away in arrogance.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless message for every believer and every caller to Islam. It reminds us never to judge people by their outward appearance, social standing, or material possessions. The poorest and most marginalized among us may carry hearts that are most receptive to the light of faith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was lovingly corrected by his Lord, and he never repeated this mistake – he would always honor Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum and treat him with the utmost respect, even appointing him as governor of Medina on two occasions.
For us today, this verse is a beautiful call to humility and sincerity in our interactions. It urges us to welcome every seeker of truth with open arms, regardless of their background. Who knows? The person you least expect might be the one whose heart Allah opens to Islam, and through them, countless others may find guidance. Never underestimate the power of a sincere soul seeking purification – for Allah looks not at your outward forms or wealth, but at your hearts and your deeds. Let us be like the Prophet, always ready to learn, always ready to prioritize the seeker of truth, and always hopeful that every soul can be purified and elevated through the light of this glorious Quran.
