Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fākihah (فَاكِهَةً): Fruits of various kinds and colors that people enjoy.
  • Abb (أَبًّا): Pasture or green fodder that grows for the benefit of grazing animals, such as cattle, sheep, and camels.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah continues to enumerate His countless blessings upon humanity, inviting us to reflect deeply on the origin of our sustenance. After mentioning grains, grapes, olives, dates, and lush gardens in the preceding verses, Allah now says: *"And fruits and pasture (for your livestock)."*

This highlights two more categories of provision: fruits — the delicious, varied produce that delights human beings and nourishes their bodies — and abb — the tender vegetation and grasses that grow naturally for the grazing of animals. This is a profound mercy: Allah does not only provide for humans directly, but also provides for the animals that serve us, carry our loads, and give us milk and meat. The entire ecosystem is woven together by His grace.

Notice the beautiful sequence: Allah first mentions water being poured down, then the earth splitting open to bring forth vegetation, and then the specific types of plants — each one tailored to a need. Fruits are for our enjoyment and health, while pasture sustains our livestock, which in turn sustain us. This is a sign of Allah’s perfect wisdom and comprehensive care.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

When you look at a single fruit — its sweetness, its color, its nourishment — or when you see a field of green grass swaying in the wind, remember that this is not random. It is the deliberate act of a Loving Creator who knows exactly what every creature needs. He says in another verse: *"And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision"* (Hud 11:6).

So, dear reader, let this verse awaken gratitude in your heart. Every meal you eat, every sip of water, every bite of fruit is a gift from the Most Merciful. And if He provides for the animals that cannot even speak their needs, how much more will He provide for you — His servant who calls upon Him? Turn to Him with trust, and you will find that His generosity has no limits. Islam teaches us to see the hand of Allah in every blessing, and this verse is a beautiful invitation to do just that.
