Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It serves to reject and refute the false claims or attitudes of the addressees.
  • Bal (بَلْ): "Rather" or "Nay" — a particle of transition that redirects the statement to the real issue at hand.
  • Tukadhdhibūn (تُكَذِّبُونَ): "You deny" or "You reject" — from the root *kadhdhaba*, meaning to declare something false or to refuse to accept it as true.
  • Bi al-Dīn (بِالدِّينِ): "The Recompense" or "The Day of Judgment" — referring to the Day when all deeds will be accounted for and recompensed.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) addresses those who are deluded by their own false notions and self-justifications. They claim to be on the right path in their worship and conduct, but Allah firmly refutes this claim: "No indeed!" — it is not as you imagine, nor are you excused in your attitudes. Rather, the real problem is that you deny the Day of Judgment and the Recompense. Because of this denial, you do not prepare for that Day, nor do you take its reality seriously. You live as though there is no accountability, no reckoning, and no ultimate justice. This denial is the root cause of your arrogance, your heedlessness, and your persistence in falsehood. Had you truly believed in the Day of Recompense, you would have acted differently — you would have submitted to your Lord, fulfilled His commands, and shunned what He has forbidden.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: the denial of the Day of Judgment is not merely an intellectual stance — it is a decisive factor that shapes one's entire life. When a person truly believes that every action, every word, and even every hidden thought will be brought forth on a Day when justice will be perfectly served, that belief transforms the heart and reforms the conduct. It instills sincerity, humility, and a constant awareness of Allah's watchful care. It turns a person away from arrogance and self-deception, and draws them closer to their Creator with love, hope, and reverent fear.

The Quran repeatedly reminds us of this Day not to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken our hearts to the most important reality of our existence: that we are not created in vain, and that we will surely return to our Lord for a just and perfect reckoning. So let us not be among those who deny or neglect this truth. Let us instead embrace it with certainty, and let it guide our steps toward righteousness, for the one who believes in the Recompense is the one who truly lives with purpose, hope, and peace — both in this world and in the Hereafter.
