Surah Al-Mutaffifin — Verse 17

• "Thumma" (Then): This indicates the sequence of events on the Day of Judgment, showing that this rebuke comes after the sinners have already entered the Fire.
• "Yuqal" (It will be said): This refers to the statement made by the angelic guards of Hell (the Zabaniyah) or by Allah Himself, as a form of humiliating reproach.

• "Kuntum bihi tukadhdhibūn" (Which you used to deny): The punishment they once mocked and rejected as impossible in their worldly life.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the disbelievers are cast into the blazing Fire—having already been denied the vision of their Lord, which is the greatest of punishments—they are then addressed with a stinging, humiliating rebuke. The guardians of Hell say to them: *"This is the very punishment you used to deny!"*

In the worldly life, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) warned them of this Day, they laughed and called it a lie. They said: "This is nothing but the tales of the ancients!" They refused to believe that they would be resurrected and held accountable. But now, the reality stands before their very eyes—the Fire is real, the punishment is real, and their denial has only increased their torment.

This statement is not merely informational; it is a weapon of psychological torment. Every lick of the flame, every pang of thirst, every moment of agony reminds them: *"This is what you mocked. This is what you said would never happen."* Their own stubbornness and arrogance have led them to this end, and now there is no escape, no excuse, and no intercessor.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The Qur'an paints it vividly so that we may wake up before it is too late. The disbelievers were not ignorant—they heard the truth, understood it, but chose arrogance over submission. They denied the Hereafter because they loved this world and its fleeting pleasures.

But you, today, have been given the gift of faith. You have been shown the truth while you still have time to act. Do not be like those who wait until the Fire is before them to believe—for then, belief will not benefit them. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent you this warning through His Book and His Messenger so that you may be among the successful.

Let this verse be a reminder that every action you take is seen, every word you speak is recorded, and every denial you utter will be confronted with its consequence. Embrace the truth now, submit to your Creator, and save yourself from a regret that will last forever. The doors of repentance are open, and Allah's mercy is vast—but the Day will surely come when the doors will close, and the only words you will hear are: *"This is what you used to deny."*

May Allah protect us all from that terrible end and grant us the joy of seeing His noble Face in the gardens of Paradise.
