Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It serves as a stern correction of the wrong attitudes and actions mentioned in the preceding verses.
- Dukkat (دُكَّتْ): Derived from *dakk*, meaning to crush, pound, or level something until it becomes flat and smooth. It signifies a violent, shattering impact.
- Dakkan dakkan (دَكًّا دَكًّا): The repetition emphasizes the intensity and continuity of the action—crushing over and over again, until the earth is completely flattened and leveled.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, addresses those who are deceived by their love for wealth and their neglect of His commands, saying: "No indeed!" — meaning, this is not how things should be, and your preoccupation with worldly gains and your arrogance will not benefit you in the least.
Then He directs their attention to the inevitable reality that awaits them: "When the earth is crushed with crushing after crushing." This refers to the moment on the Day of Resurrection when the earth will be violently shaken and pounded — its mountains will be blown away, its buildings demolished, and its surface completely flattened into a plain level expanse. The repetition of the word *dakkan* conveys that this crushing will occur repeatedly, layer upon layer, until nothing remains standing, and all creation is brought low before its Creator.
This verse serves as a powerful wake-up call: the very ground you walk on, the homes you take pride in, and the wealth you hoard will all be reduced to rubble in an instant. On that Day, every soul will stand alone before Allah, stripped of all worldly illusions. The One who created the heavens and the earth, and who will crush the earth with His absolute power, is the only One worthy of your devotion and obedience.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart before the earth is crushed beneath your feet. The One who will level the mountains and flatten the earth is the same Lord who is calling you today — not to destroy you, but to save you. He has given you this life as a test, and He has sent His messengers and His Book as a mercy, so that you may turn to Him before that inevitable Day arrives. Do not wait until the earth is crushed and the angels surround you, for then it will be too late to return. Embrace the beauty of Islam now, and let your heart be softened by the remembrance of Allah, so that on that Day, you may be among those who are raised in honor, not among those who are crushed by regret. The path to eternal success is open before you — take it while you still have the chance.
