Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Yā Laytanī" (يا ليتني): An expression of intense regret and wishing — "Oh, would that I had..."
- "Qaddamtu" (قدّمتُ): I had sent forward / I had prepared in advance.
- "Li-Ḥayātī" (لحياتي): For my [true] life — meaning the everlasting life of the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that Day of Judgment, when the human being witnesses the reality of what they have done and what they have failed to do, they will cry out in overwhelming regret: *"Oh, would that I had sent forward [good deeds] for my [true] life!"*
This is not the life of this world — which is fleeting, temporary, and full of illusions — but rather the eternal life of the Hereafter, which is the real and everlasting existence. The person realizes, at that moment when it is too late, that the deeds they should have performed — faith, prayer, charity, kindness, and obedience to Allah — were the only provisions that could benefit them in that eternal abode. But now, the opportunity has passed, and all that remains is sorrow and lamentation.
This verse paints a vivid picture of the profound regret that will seize the soul when the veil is lifted and the truth becomes clear. The person who neglected their duties and chased after worldly pleasures will wish they had invested in what truly matters — their relationship with their Lord and the good deeds that would illuminate their path in the afterlife.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a story about others — it is a mirror held up to each one of us. Today, while we still have breath in our bodies and time in our hands, we have the precious opportunity to "send forward" deeds for our real life. Every prayer you offer, every kind word you speak, every charity you give, every sin you avoid for the sake of Allah — these are your true investments. They are like seeds you plant today that will bloom into gardens of eternal bliss tomorrow.
Do not wait until the moment when you will cry out in regret. The door of repentance is open now, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, accepts those who turn to Him sincerely. Seize this moment, for it is the only moment you truly own. Let your life be one that you will look back on with joy, not sorrow — a life filled with deeds that will welcome you in the Hereafter with open arms.
