Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Jee'a (وَجِيءَ) – "Brought forth" – indicating that Hellfire will be presented and dragged into view on that Day.
- Jahannam (بِجَهَنَّمَ) – Hellfire, the ultimate punishment prepared for the disbelievers.
- Yatadhakkaru (يَتَذَكَّرُ) – He will remember, recall, and reflect upon his past deeds.
- Wa anna lahu al-dhikra (وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ) – "And how could the remembrance benefit him then?" – a rhetorical question expressing utter futility.
The Interpretation:
On that tremendous Day, when the earth is shaken to its very core and the Lord comes to judge all of creation, Hellfire itself will be brought forth—dragged by seventy thousand reins, each pulled by seventy thousand angels, a sight of sheer terror and awe. At that moment, every soul will remember what it did in this worldly life. The disbeliever will suddenly recall his disobedience, his arrogance, his rejection of the truth, and all the opportunities he wasted to do good. He will wish he had believed, repented, and acted righteously.
But then comes the crushing reality: *"And how could the remembrance benefit him then?"* It is too late. That Day is not a day for action or repentance—it is a day of recompense and justice. The door of return has been sealed forever. The regret will burn within him even before the fire touches him, for he will realize that every moment of his past life could have been his salvation, yet he chose otherwise.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this vivid scene is not meant to frighten you into despair—it is a divine mercy calling you to wake up *now*, while the door of repentance is still wide open. Allah, in His infinite compassion, has shown you this reality before it happens so that you may never have to taste that regret. Today, your remembrance, your prayer, your charity, and your turning back to Allah are worth more than all the gold and silver in the universe. Do not wait for the Day when remembrance comes too late. Seize this precious moment—right now—to draw closer to your Lord, for today is the day of action, and tomorrow is the day of recompense. Let this warning transform your heart into one that is grateful, humble, and eager to please its Creator.
