Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Jahhazahum bi-jahazihim": He provided them with their supplies and provisions — giving each brother a camel-load of grain, as was customary for travelers.
  • "Awfi al-kayl": I give full measure — completing the scale without any deficiency.
  • "Khayr al-munzilin": The best of hosts — the most generous and honorable in receiving and accommodating guests.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, had prepared their provisions and given each of his brothers a full camel-load of grain, and after he had honored them with generous hospitality — for he had received them warmly and seated them with dignity — he then addressed them. They had earlier mentioned that they had a younger brother, Benjamin, who had remained behind with their aging father, and that their father could not bear to part with him. Seizing this opportunity, Yusuf said to them: "Bring me your brother from your father's side — that brother of yours — and I will give you an additional camel-load for him. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts? I have given you generously, treated you kindly, and fulfilled your needs completely. So if you return with him, you will find in me the most generous of providers and the most honorable of companions."

Yusuf's words were gentle and wise, designed to plant in their hearts a desire to return with Benjamin, while also reminding them of his own integrity and generosity. He did not reveal his identity, nor did he reproach them for their past actions — instead, he opened a door of kindness and mercy, hoping that through this, his beloved brother would come to him, and the plan of Allah would unfold in the most beautiful way.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us the noble character of a believer: even when you hold power and authority, you treat others with kindness, generosity, and wisdom. Yusuf, despite being the ruler of Egypt and having full control over the brothers who had once wronged him, did not use his position to humiliate or punish them. Rather, he spoke to them with gentleness, honored them, and gave them more than they expected. This is the way of the righteous — to repay harm with goodness, and to open hearts through mercy rather than force. It also shows us the importance of family ties and the deep love a brother holds for his brother, even after years of separation. Let us learn from Yusuf's example: be generous in your dealings, be kind in your speech, and trust that Allah will bring about the best outcomes for those who are patient and sincere.
