Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "كَيْل" (Kayl): Measurement or ration of grain; here it refers to the food provisions that were being distributed.
- "تَقْرَبُون" (Taqrabūn): To come near or approach; here it means approaching the land or presence of the ruler.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is part of the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him) when he was the minister in charge of Egypt's granaries during the years of famine. His brothers had come from Canaan to seek food, and he recognized them, though they did not recognize him. After testing them regarding their honesty, he demanded that they bring their full brother (Binyamin) on their next visit as proof of their truthfulness.
Here, Yusuf (peace be upon him) delivers a firm and clear ultimatum: "But if you do not bring him to me, you will have no measure [of grain] from me, nor will you come near me." This means that if they failed to return with their brother, they would receive no food rations whatsoever, and they would not even be permitted to enter Egypt or approach his presence again. This was a decisive warning that left no room for negotiation—their access to essential provisions during a time of severe famine was entirely conditional upon fulfilling this demand.
The wisdom in this stern approach lies in its purpose: Yusuf (peace be upon him) was not being harsh for its own sake, but rather he was establishing a just and necessary test to reunite his family and fulfill the divine plan. He knew that his brothers had once wronged him by casting him into the well, and now he was gently, yet firmly, guiding them toward honesty, accountability, and the restoration of their family bonds. His words carried both a warning and an implicit invitation—a chance for them to prove their integrity and correct their past mistakes.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us profound lessons about responsibility, truthfulness, and the consequences of our actions. Just as Yusuf (peace be upon him) set clear conditions for his brothers, Allah sets clear conditions for us in His guidance—conditions that lead to our success in this life and the Hereafter. When we fulfill our promises and uphold our duties with sincerity, Allah opens doors of provision and mercy. Conversely, when we neglect our obligations or act dishonestly, we may find ourselves deprived of blessings. Let this be a reminder: our relationship with Allah and with people is built on trust and integrity. If we honor our commitments, Allah honors us with His grace; if we break them, we only harm ourselves. The believer is one who speaks the truth, keeps promises, and strives to rectify past wrongs—just as the brothers of Yusuf were given the opportunity to do, and just as we are given every single day through repentance and good deeds. May Allah make us among those who are truthful and steadfast.
