Word Meanings:
- الْمُنظَرِينَ (Al-Munthareen): Those who are granted a delay or respite; those whose punishment or death is postponed to a specified time.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty responds to Iblis (Satan) after his arrogant refusal to prostrate to Adam (peace be upon him) and his subsequent request for respite until the Day of Resurrection. Allah says: "He (Allah) said: 'Then indeed, you are of those who are granted respite.'"
This means that Allah accepted Iblis's request for a delay, but not until the Day of Resurrection as Iblis had asked. Rather, Allah granted him respite only until the Day of the first Trumpet blast—the day when all creation will die before the resurrection. This is a significant distinction: Iblis will not live until the Day of Judgment itself, but only until the appointed time when all living beings perish.
The wisdom behind this divine response is profound. Allah did not grant this respite because Iblis deserved it or because Allah was compelled by his request. Rather, it was an act of divine wisdom and a test for humanity. By allowing Iblis to continue his existence until a specified time, Allah made this world a place of trial and testing for both humans and jinn. The presence of Iblis and his whispers serves as a means to distinguish those who obey Allah sincerely from those who follow their desires and the promptings of Satan.
This respite is also a form of divine justice and wisdom—a gradual unfolding of events that allows human beings to exercise their free will, to choose between right and wrong, and to earn their eternal destiny through their own choices. It is not a sign of Allah's approval of Iblis, but rather a manifestation of Allah's perfect plan and His infinite wisdom in dealing with His creation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the greatness of Allah's wisdom in this verse. Even when dealing with His most arrogant enemy, Allah's response is measured, wise, and purposeful. The respite given to Iblis is not a victory for him, but rather a divine strategy that turns his very existence into a means of elevating the ranks of the righteous. Every moment of this world is an opportunity for you—an opportunity to draw closer to Allah, to overcome the whispers of Satan, and to earn a place in the eternal bliss of Paradise. Do not waste this precious time, for the respite granted to Iblis is limited, and your own life is equally limited. Use every breath to seek Allah's pleasure, and you will find that even the trials of this world become stepping stones to eternal success. Allah's mercy is vast, His wisdom is perfect, and His promise is true. Turn to Him today, before the appointed time arrives, and you will find Him waiting with open arms of forgiveness and love.
