Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shahīd (شَهِيدًا): A witness — here, meaning the Messenger sent to each nation, who will bear witness on the Day of Judgment about how his people responded to the message.
- Lā yu'dhan (لَا يُؤْذَنُ): Permission will not be granted — specifically, no leave will be given for them to offer excuses.
- Yusta'tabūn (يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ): Derived from *'itāb* (reproach for a fault); it means they will not be asked to seek God's pleasure through apology or good deeds, nor will they be invited to make amends.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah directs His Prophet ﷺ — and through him, all believers — to remind humanity of a scene of awe-inspiring gravity on the Day of Resurrection. On that Day, Allah will raise from every single nation its own Messenger as a witness. Each Messenger will testify truthfully about his people: who among them believed and followed the guidance, and who rejected it and turned away. This testimony is not based on mere knowledge but on lived experience — the Messenger was present among them, delivered the message clearly, and witnessed their choices firsthand.
Then comes the decisive moment: after this testimony is established, the disbelievers will not be granted permission to offer any excuse. Their tongues will be tied, their justifications void. Nor will they be asked to seek God's pleasure through repentance or righteous deeds — because the time for action has passed. The Hereafter is a realm of recompense, not a realm of work. The door of return to this world is shut forever, and the opportunity for amendment has expired.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for us in this life: the time to act is now. The Messengers have already testified to the truth, and we have been given the gift of choice. Let us not wait until the Day when excuses are rejected and apologies are unheard. Let us seize this precious moment — today — to turn to our Lord, to believe, to repent, and to do good, so that when the witnesses stand before us, they will testify in our favor, not against us.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is the mercy of Allah that He has sent us His Messengers and His Books as witnesses of truth *before* the Day of Judgment — so that we may not be taken by surprise! He has given us the Qur'an, the final witness, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final Messenger, to guide us. This is a mercy that calls us to respond with gratitude and obedience. Let us make our faith a living testimony — through our prayers, our character, and our deeds — so that on that great Day, we may be among those for whom the witnesses speak well, and not among those whose excuses are rejected.
