Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shurakā'ahum (شُرَكَاءَهُمْ): Their partners — the idols and false deities they used to worship alongside Allah.
  • Nad'ū (نَدْعُو): We called upon / we worshipped.
  • Fa'alqaw (فَأَلْقَوْا): They (the false deities) threw back / responded with.
  • Al-Qawl (الْقَوْل): The statement/saying.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, when those who committed shirk (associating partners with Allah) see the false deities they worshipped in this worldly life — whether idols, stones, or other beings they had elevated to the status of partners with Allah — they will desperately address their Lord, saying: "Our Lord! These are our partners whom we used to call upon and worship besides You."

In saying this, they attempt to shift the blame onto these false deities, as if to say: "These are the ones who misled us — hold them accountable!" But at that very moment, Allah will grant speech to those very idols and false gods, and they will respond firmly, declaring: "Indeed, you are liars!"

This response is a decisive refutation of the polytheists' claim. The false deities will make it clear that they never commanded anyone to worship them, never claimed divinity for themselves, and never desired any form of worship. They were merely objects — unable to benefit or harm — and the polytheists chose to worship them out of their own misguided desires and following their own vain whims. Thus, the blame falls entirely upon the worshippers themselves, not the worshipped.

This verse carries a profound lesson for humanity: on that Day, every excuse will be shattered, every falsehood exposed, and every soul will face the full reality of its choices. The very things people relied upon besides Allah will disown them and testify against them.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, how many things do people today "worship" besides Allah — not necessarily idols of stone, but the worship of wealth, status, desires, and worldly pleasures? On that Day, all these will likewise disown their devotees. The only true refuge is to purify our worship for Allah alone, to turn to Him sincerely in every moment of our lives, and to build our relationship with Him upon tawhid (absolute monotheism). For He is the Only One who will never disappoint His sincere servants, and His promise of Paradise for the believers is true and certain. Let us hasten to return to Him before that Day when no excuse will avail, and when only sincere faith and righteous deeds will speak in our favor.

📜 Verse 84-88 — An-Nahl

And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect from every nation a witness. Then it will not be permitted to the disbelievers [to apologize or make excuses], nor will they be asked to appease [Allah].
And when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.
And when those who associated others with Allah see their "partners," they will say," Our Lord, these are our partners [to You] whom we used to invoke besides You." But they will throw at them the statement, "Indeed, you are liars."
And they will impart to Allah that Day [their] submission, and lost from them is what they used to invent.
Those who disbelieved and averted [others] from the way of Allah - We will increase them in punishment over [their] punishment for what corruption they were causing.
