Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Numiddu (نُمِدُّ): We extend, increase, or grant gradually and continuously.
- Atā’ (عَطَاء): Gift, grant, or provision.
- Mahẓūran (مَحْظُورًا): Forbidden, withheld, or prevented.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Messenger ﷺ and informs him of a profound truth about His universal mercy and generosity. Allah says that He extends His provisions to *both* groups of people — those who strive for the fleeting pleasures of this worldly life, and those who strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. He grants sustenance to the believer and the disbeliever alike, to the righteous and the wicked, without discrimination in this world.
This is because the provision of Allah is an outpouring of His boundless grace and favor, not a reward for merit alone. His generosity encompasses all of creation. The verse emphasizes that the gift of your Lord — O Messenger — is never withheld from anyone. Whether a person is a devout worshipper or a rebellious sinner, Allah continues to provide them with food, drink, health, and countless blessings in this life. The rain falls on the fields of both the pious and the impious; the sun shines on the homes of both the obedient and the disobedient.
This reality carries a profound lesson: the worldly provision is not a sign of Allah's pleasure with a person, nor is the lack of it a sign of His displeasure. Rather, this world is a place of testing, where Allah grants respite and sustenance to all, while the true distinction between people lies in their faith and deeds, which will be fully recompensed in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, contemplate the depth of Allah's mercy! Even when we disobey Him, He does not cut off His provisions from us. He feeds us, clothes us, and sustains us while we are immersed in sin. This is an invitation to turn back to Him in gratitude and obedience. If His worldly generosity is so vast, how much greater must His reward be for those who believe and do righteous deeds? Let this verse fill your heart with hope in Allah's mercy and motivate you to strive for the eternal bliss of Paradise, which is far superior to the fleeting pleasures of this world. Allah's door of mercy is always open — so hasten to Him before the appointed time arrives.
