Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Khashyata Imlaq: Fearing poverty or destitution that might befall them in the future.
  • Khit'an Kabira: A grave sin, a tremendous offense.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O servants of Allah, do not kill your children out of fear of poverty or the dread of future destitution. This prohibition addresses a deeply rooted practice of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), when people buried their daughters alive — and sometimes killed their sons — terrified that providing for them would drain their wealth and lead them to ruin. Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, abolishes this monstrous act entirely.

He reminds you: "We provide for them and for you." Reflect on the order of this divine statement — Allah mentions the sustenance of the children *before* that of the parents. This is a profound reassurance: the One who created that innocent soul has already decreed its provision. Your worry is baseless, for the Rizq (sustenance) of every living being is guaranteed by the Lord of the Worlds. The same Hand that feeds you is more than capable of feeding them — indeed, your children are a trust from Allah, and He has already written their share of provision before they were even born.

Then Allah seals this command with a stern warning: "Indeed, killing them is a great sin." The Arabic word *khit'an* emphasizes that this act is not merely a mistake or a lapse in judgment — it is a deliberate, heinous transgression. The child has committed no crime, carries no burden, and deserves no punishment. To take an innocent life out of fear of poverty is to reject the very promise of Allah and to elevate your anxiety above your trust in Him.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear believer, let this verse wash over your heart with its profound mercy. Your Lord is Al-Razzaq — The Great Provider. He does not forget a single sparrow in the sky, so how could He forget your child? When you find yourself anxious about provision, remember that the One who owns the treasures of the heavens and the earth has already guaranteed your sustenance and that of your family. The Qur'an teaches us to face the future with tawakkul (reliance on Allah), not with fear that drives us to sin.

And in our modern age, this verse carries a powerful message against all forms of killing — whether through abortion out of fear of financial hardship, or through neglect, or through any act that takes an innocent life. Every child is a gift from Allah, a source of blessing and barakah in your home. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Your wealth and your children are a test" — and indeed, they are a test of whether you will trust Allah's promise or succumb to the whispers of Shaytan.

So embrace your children as blessings, not burdens. Raise them with love, provide for them with the halal earnings Allah grants you, and rest assured that the One who brought them into this world will never abandon them — nor you. This is the beauty of Islam: it frees you from the chains of anxiety and places your trust firmly in the hands of the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Al-Isra

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right. And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].
