Key Words and Meanings:

  • Zina (الزِّنَا): Unlawful sexual intercourse, adultery, or fornication.
  • Fahishah (فَاحِشَةً): An abominable act, an extreme indecency, a grave sin that is repugnant to sound nature and reason.
  • Sa'a sabilan (سَاءَ سَبِيلًا): An evil way, a wretched path, a disastrous course of conduct.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most Merciful, commands His servants with a profound and protective prohibition: "And do not approach zina (unlawful sexual relations)." Notice that the command is not merely "do not commit" but "do not even approach" it. This is a divine safeguard—a warning to stay far away from all its precursors and pathways. This includes the lustful glances, the flirtatous words, the private meetings, the suggestive conversations, and every step that leads a person toward this grave sin. By closing the doors that lead to it, Allah protects His servants from falling into the abyss.

The verse then explains why this prohibition is so severe: "Indeed, it is a fahishah" — an act of extreme indecency and moral depravity, one that is openly detestable and repugnant to pure hearts and sound minds. It violates the sanctity of the individual, the family, and the entire society. It is a sin that brings shame, destroys trust, and corrupts lineages.

And then Allah says: "And an evil way" — it is the worst of paths, a road that leads to destruction in this world and the Hereafter. It is a path that brings with it diseases, broken homes, orphaned children, psychological trauma, and above all, the displeasure of Allah. It is a way that leads to Hellfire unless one repents sincerely.

A Call to the Believers:

Dear brothers and sisters in faith, reflect on the beauty of this divine guidance. Allah does not simply say "do not commit zina"—He tells us not to even come near it. This is the mercy of the Creator, Who knows the weakness of His servants and the temptations of this world. He wants to protect you, your honor, your family, and your soul.

Islam offers a noble alternative: the sacred bond of marriage, which purifies the heart, fulfills desires lawfully, and builds a righteous society. Allah has made lawful for you what is pure and good, and He has prohibited what is harmful and corrupt. So turn to Him with a sincere heart, lower your gaze, guard your chastity, and seek His help. For whoever fears Allah and controls his desires, Allah will grant him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.

And if you have fallen into this sin, know that the door of repentance is wide open. Allah, the Most Forgiving, loves to forgive. Return to Him, and He will replace your sins with good deeds. Do not despair of His mercy—for He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.

And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right. And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
