Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Insān (الإنسان): Here it refers to the disbelieving human being who denies the Resurrection.
- A-idhā mā mittu (أإذا ما مِتُّ): "When I have died" — expressing the moment of death and decay.
- La-sawfa ukhraju hayyan (لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا): "I will surely be brought forth alive" — meaning raised from the grave to a new life.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse captures the voice of the disbelieving human being who, in his arrogance and denial, questions the very possibility of life after death. He says, mockingly and with incredulity: "What! When I have died and turned to dust, shall I really be brought out of my grave alive again?" This is not a sincere question seeking truth, but rather a statement of rejection and ridicule — a challenge thrown at the idea of Resurrection.
The historical context reveals that this verse was revealed regarding a specific individual, Ubayy ibn Khalaf, who was a staunch enemy of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He took a decayed bone, crumbled it in his hand, and blew its dust into the air, saying: "Who can give life to this after it has rotted?" So Allah responded to his arrogance with this verse, recording his words as a testament to human folly.
The deeper meaning here is profound: the human being forgets his own origin. He was nothing, then Allah created him from a drop of fluid, then brought him forth into this world. If Allah could create him the first time — from nothing — then why should bringing him back to life after death be difficult? The One who originated creation is perfectly capable of repeating it.
This verse serves as a gentle but firm reminder to every soul: your life does not end at the grave. The very body that you see decaying and returning to earth will be recreated by the same Power that first fashioned it. The disbeliever's astonishment at the Resurrection is misplaced — for the greater miracle has already happened: his very existence.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: if you truly believe that a single cell can divide and grow into a complete human being — with eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that beats — then how can you doubt that the One who did this once can do it again? The Resurrection is not a distant fantasy; it is the inevitable appointment with your Lord. Do not let arrogance or heedlessness blind you. The grave is not the end — it is merely a waiting room for the eternal life that follows. Prepare for that day, for on it, every soul will stand before its Creator, and every deed — great or small — will be brought to account. Let this verse awaken your heart before your own moment of death arrives, so that when you are raised, you are raised among the successful, not among the deniers.
