- يَعْرِفُونَهُ (Ya'rifunahu): They recognize him — i.e., they recognize Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the descriptions and signs found in their own scriptures.
- لَيَكْتُمُونَ (Layaktumun): They conceal — they hide and suppress the truth deliberately.
- الْحَقَّ (Al-Haqq): The truth — the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the signs confirming it.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah Almighty addresses the scholars and learned people among the People of the Book — the rabbis of the Jews and the clergy of the Christians — stating that they know the truth about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with absolute certainty. They recognize him just as clearly as a father recognizes his own child among a crowd of people. This recognition is not based on guesswork or speculation; rather, it comes from the explicit descriptions, characteristics, and signs of the final Prophet that are recorded in their own holy books — the Torah and the Gospel. These scriptures contained clear announcements of his coming, his lineage, his physical features, his manners, and even the precise timing of his appearance.
The verse then exposes a grave reality: despite this certain knowledge, a group among them deliberately conceals the truth. They hide what they know to be true — the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the divine command regarding the change of the qiblah (direction of prayer) to the Ka'bah — not out of ignorance, but out of envy, arrogance, and fear of losing their worldly status and influence over their communities. They do this while fully knowing in their hearts that it is the truth.
This verse serves as a powerful testimony to the authenticity of Islam and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). The very scriptures that preceded the Qur'an bore witness to his coming, and the people who held those scriptures knew it well. Their concealment of this truth only confirms its reality — for one only hides something of great value and importance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The recognition of the truth is one thing, but acting upon it is another. These scholars knew the truth yet chose to hide it for worldly gains. How many of us today know the truth of Islam yet hesitate to embrace it fully or to share it with others?
The Qur'an invites you to open your heart to the light of truth. The signs of Allah's final message are clear, the proofs are overwhelming, and the call to guidance is open to all. Do not be like those who knew the truth but suppressed it. Instead, be among those who, upon recognizing the truth, embrace it wholeheartedly and proclaim it with courage and sincerity.
Allah has made the path to Him clear and has sent His final Messenger as a mercy to all of humanity. The knowledge that the People of the Book possessed about him is a testament to the unity of Allah's message throughout history — from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). All the prophets came with the same core message: worship Allah alone and follow His guidance.
Let this verse strengthen your faith and increase your appreciation for the Qur'an, which confirms the truth that came before it and stands as the final, preserved, and complete revelation for all of mankind until the end of time.
