Word Meanings:

  • اتَّقِ اللَّهَ (attaqi Allah): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and fulfill His commands while avoiding His prohibitions.
  • الْعِزَّةُ بِالْإِثْمِ (al-ʿizzatu bil-ithm): Pride and arrogance that drive a person to persist in sin and wrongdoing.
  • حَسْبُهُ (hasbuhu): Sufficient for him; enough as a recompense.
  • الْمِهَادُ (al-mihād): A resting place, bed, or abode.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid picture of a certain type of person—one who is deeply entrenched in corruption and mischief on earth. When such a person is sincerely advised, "Fear Allah and be mindful of His punishment; stop your wrongdoing and corruption," they do not respond with humility or reflection. Instead, their pride and arrogance take over. They feel a false sense of honor that pushes them further into sin, refusing to accept the truth or yield to sound advice. Their ego becomes a barrier between them and guidance.

The verse then delivers a powerful and sobering consequence: "Then Hell is sufficient for him." This means that the punishment of Hellfire is more than enough to repay their arrogance and persistence in sin. No other punishment is needed—the Fire alone will be their just and complete recompense. And then the verse concludes with a piercing description: "And what an evil resting place!" This is a rhetorical expression of utter contempt, emphasizing that Hell is the worst possible abode—a place of torment, regret, and despair.

This verse serves as a profound warning to all who read it. It teaches us that pride and arrogance are among the most dangerous diseases of the heart. When a person rejects sincere advice out of stubbornness, they are not only harming others through their corruption but also sealing their own fate. The Quran calls us to humility, to listen to good counsel, and to always be ready to return to Allah, no matter how far we have strayed. The door of repentance is always open, but the one who meets Allah in a state of arrogant defiance has chosen the worst possible end.

Let this verse be a reminder for us all: true honor lies not in stubbornly clinging to sin, but in humbling ourselves before our Creator. The one who fears Allah and accepts guidance is the one who has truly succeeded, both in this life and the next. May Allah protect us from the arrogance that leads to destruction and grant us the humility that leads to His mercy.

And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption.

And when it is said to him, "Fear Allah," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.
207وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ
And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants.
O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
