Word Meanings:
- Al-Hikmah (الحكمة): Sound judgment, wisdom, and precision in speech and action—the ability to place things in their proper context and act accordingly.
- Ulul-Albab (أولو الألباب): People of sound intellect and pure understanding—those whose minds are illuminated by divine guidance and who perceive the deeper realities beyond the surface.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, grants *al-hikmah*—the profound ability to speak truthfully, judge rightly, and act correctly—to whomsoever He wills from among His servants. This is not a random distribution but a divine selection based on His perfect knowledge of who is deserving and receptive to such a gift.
When a person is blessed with this wisdom, they have indeed been given an immense treasure—a goodness so vast that no worldly wealth or fleeting pleasure can compare to it. For wisdom is the key to every success: it guides one to righteous deeds, protects from harmful paths, and leads to eternal felicity in the Hereafter. The one who possesses it navigates life's trials with clarity, resolves conflicts with fairness, and draws nearer to Allah with every step.
Yet, who truly reflects upon this divine favor and internalizes its significance? Only those with *ulul-albab*—people of sound intellect who use their minds to see beyond the material world, who ponder the signs of Allah, and who allow His light to illuminate their hearts. Such people recognize the value of wisdom, seek it earnestly, and thank their Lord for this supreme blessing.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, consider the immense value of this divine gift. Allah is telling you that wisdom—the ability to discern right from wrong, to speak with insight, and to act with excellence—is among the greatest blessings you can ever receive. It is better than mountains of gold and silver, for it brings you closer to your Creator and secures your success in both worlds.
So, turn your heart toward your Lord, ask Him for this precious gift, and strive to acquire it through sincere learning, deep reflection, and righteous action. The door is open, and the Giver is Most Generous. Will you not be among those who seek it?
