Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ" — What Allah has revealed (i.e., the Qur'an).
- "بِمَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا" — What was revealed to us (i.e., the Torah).
- "وَمَا وَرَاءَهُ" — What is beyond it (i.e., other than the Torah, meaning the Qur'an).
- "مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ" — Confirming the truth of what they already have (the Torah).
- "تَقْتُلُونَ أَنبِيَاءَ اللَّهِ" — You kill the prophets of Allah (referring to their ancestors' actions, which they endorsed).
Explanation of the Verse:
When the believers among the People of the Book were called to faith in the Qur'an — the final revelation from Allah — the Jews responded with arrogance and selective belief. They said, "We believe only in what was sent down to us," meaning the Torah, and they rejected everything that came after it, including the Qur'an. Yet the Qur'an is the absolute truth, and it confirms the core teachings of the Torah — the oneness of Allah, the message of prophethood, and the call to righteousness. If they truly believed in their own scripture, they would have recognized the Qur'an as its fulfillment and confirmation, not rejected it.
Allah then exposes the contradiction in their claim. He instructs the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to ask them: "If you truly believe in what was revealed to you, then why did your ancestors kill the prophets of Allah who came before you?" Their history is stained with the murder of prophets — a crime explicitly forbidden in the Torah itself. By approving of their ancestors' deeds and refusing to learn from their mistakes, they were complicit in that same sin. True faith is not a matter of lip service; it is a matter of submission to Allah's complete message, not picking and choosing what suits one's desires.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every soul to examine the sincerity of their faith. Do we accept the truth wholeheartedly, or do we cling to fragments of it while rejecting what challenges our comfort? The Qur'an is not a new religion that contradicts previous scriptures — it is the final confirmation and completion of the divine message that has always called humanity to worship Allah alone and follow His messengers. When we embrace the Qur'an, we are not abandoning the earlier prophets; we are honoring them by following the last and greatest of them, Muhammad (peace be upon him), who came to perfect the very message they carried.
Let this verse be a reminder that faith demands consistency. If we claim to love Allah and His messengers, we must accept His final word with an open heart. The Qur'an is a light that illuminates the path to Allah, a mercy for all mankind, and a guide that leads to eternal success. Open your heart to it, and you will find in it the peace your soul seeks and the answers your mind longs for. Do not be like those who rejected the truth out of pride or habit — be among those who recognize the truth, embrace it, and live by it, for that is the path of the true believers.
