Key Words and Phrases:

  • ʿAdūw (عَدُوّ): Enemy — one who harbors malice and seeks to harm another.
  • Lā yukhrijannakumā (لَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا): "Let him not drive you both out" — a stern warning emphasizing the danger of following the enemy's whispers.
  • Fatashqā (فَتَشْقَى): "Then you will be miserable" — meaning hardship, toil, and distress, particularly in earning a living and facing the struggles of worldly life.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah created Adam and his wife Hawwā (Eve) and placed them in the Garden of Paradise, He gave them a clear and direct warning. Allah said: "O Adam, indeed this one — meaning Iblīs (Satan) — is an enemy to you and to your wife." This is not merely a statement of fact; it is a declaration of war. Satan's enmity is ancient, deep-rooted, and relentless. He swore by Allah's might to mislead Adam and his descendants, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goal.

Allah then issued a firm command: "So let him not drive you both out of Paradise, for then you will be miserable." The warning is twofold. First, it alerts Adam and Hawwā to the danger of obeying Satan's whispers, for doing so would lead to their expulsion from the blissful Garden. Second, it reveals the consequence of that expulsion: hardship and toil in the life of this world. The word *fatashqā* (then you will be miserable) specifically addresses Adam, because it is generally the man who bears the burden of providing for his family — seeking food, drink, clothing, and shelter through effort and labor. In Paradise, all of this was readily available without any struggle; in the worldly life, it requires sweat, patience, and perseverance.

This verse is a profound lesson for all of humanity. It teaches us that Satan is not a distant myth but a real, active enemy who seeks to separate us from the mercy of Allah. His tools are whispers, doubts, and the beautification of sin. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave us without guidance. He gave us this warning, sent us prophets, and revealed the Qur'an so that we may guard ourselves against this enemy. The path to Paradise is through obedience to Allah and resistance to Satan's calls. And even when we slip and fall, as Adam did, Allah's door of repentance remains open — for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart. You have been warned, just as Adam was warned. The enemy is still lurking, waiting for a moment of heedlessness. But you are not weak; you are equipped with faith, with the Qur'an, and with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Every time you resist a sin for the sake of Allah, you are defeating that enemy. Every time you turn back to Allah in repentance, you are reclaiming your place among the righteous. Paradise is not lost — it is the ultimate goal, and the struggles of this world are but a temporary test. So hold firm to your Lord, seek His protection from the accursed Satan, and strive with sincerity. Indeed, the reward of Allah is far greater than any hardship you may face in this life.
