Word Meanings:

  • اسْجُدُوا (usjudū): Prostrate yourselves — a command to bow down as an act of honor and respect, not worship.
  • أَبَىٰ (abā): Refused — indicating a deliberate, stubborn rejection out of arrogance, not an inability or hesitation.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, remind the people of the time when your Lord said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam as a sign of honor and reverence." And they all obeyed the command and prostrated — every single one of them — except Iblis (Satan), who was present among them but was not one of them by nature. He refused to prostrate, driven by pride and arrogance, and thus disobeyed the explicit command of his Lord.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: obedience to Allah is the path of honor, while pride and arrogance are the seeds of ruin. When Allah commands, the angels — despite their lofty status — submit without question, showing us that true greatness lies in humility before the Creator. Iblis, on the other hand, let his ego overcome his reason, and he fell from grace forever.

Dear reader, reflect on this scene: the very first act of worship in the story of humanity was a lesson in humility. Allah honored Adam by commanding the angels to bow to him, and He honored you by making you a descendant of Adam. Yet the enemy of mankind, Iblis, refused to accept this divine decree out of envy and pride. So beware of arrogance in your own heart — for it was the first sin ever committed against Allah. And embrace humility, for it is the key that opens the doors of divine mercy and guidance. Let this story inspire you to submit to Allah’s commands willingly and lovingly, just as the angels did, so that you may attain His pleasure and eternal success.

📜 Verse 114-118 — Taha

So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees; he refused.
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
