Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Wa-dmum" (وَاضْمُمْ): Draw close or press together.
  • "Janāhik" (جَنَاحِكَ): Your side, specifically the area under the upper arm (the armpit region).
  • "Takhruj" (تَخْرُجْ): It will come out or emerge.
  • "Bayḍāʾ" (بَيْضَاء): White, radiant like snow.
  • "Min ghayri sūʾ" (مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ): Without any harm, defect, or disease — specifically meaning without leprosy (baraṣ).
  • "Āyatan ukhrā" (آيَةً أُخْرَى): Another sign or miracle.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Allah Almighty commanded His Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to cast down his staff, which then turned into a moving serpent by Allah's power, and then commanded him to seize it without fear, Allah now gives him a second miraculous sign to strengthen his mission and to be a decisive proof before Pharaoh and his people.

Allah says: "And press your hand to your side" — meaning, place your right hand inside your garment, tucked under your upper arm or into your chest area. When you draw it out, it will emerge white and radiant, shining like pure snow or brilliant light — without any harm or defect, meaning completely free from leprosy or any skin disease. This whiteness is not a sickness; rather, it is a luminous, supernatural glow that serves as a clear miracle.

This is described as "another sign" — a second, distinct proof of Musa's prophethood, complementing the miracle of the staff. Together, these two signs were sufficient evidence of the truth of his message before Pharaoh, who was known for his arrogance and denial.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful and profound is this verse in teaching us about Allah's boundless power and His care for His chosen messengers! Just as Allah transformed Musa's staff into a living serpent and then back again, and just as He made his hand shine with a pure, radiant light — He is the One who transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, the weak into the strong, and the fearful into the brave.

For us as believers, this verse carries a timeless lesson: when Allah sends a trial or a task our way, He always equips us with the means to succeed. He never leaves His servant alone. Musa was given not one, but two clear signs — because the mission was great, and the opposition was fierce. Likewise, in our daily lives, when we strive to uphold the truth, Allah grants us support, clarity, and strength in ways we may not expect.

Moreover, the purity of the miracle — white without any blemish — reminds us of the purity of Islam itself. It is a religion of light, clarity, and perfection, free from the defects of falsehood. Just as Musa's hand shone with a radiant whiteness, the guidance of the Qur'an illuminates hearts and removes the darkness of ignorance and sin.

So, whenever you feel overwhelmed by challenges, remember: the same Allah who made a hand shine with light and a staff come alive can turn your difficulties into ease, your weakness into strength, and your darkness into light. Trust Him, draw close to Him, and He will never forsake you.
