Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Bāl" (بَالُ): Condition, state, or affair. It refers to the situation or circumstances of something.
- "Al-Qurūn" (الْقُرُونِ): The nations or generations of people who lived in past eras. It signifies communities that existed before the time of Moses (peace be upon him).
- "Al-Ūlā" (الْأُولَىٰ): The earlier or previous ones — those who came before in bygone times.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
Here, Pharaoh — in his arrogance and stubbornness — responds to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) after Moses had spoken of the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them. Pharaoh, trying to deflect the truth and avoid submission, asks: *"Then what is the condition of the earlier generations?"* — meaning, what about the nations of old who also rejected their messengers and lived in disbelief, such as the people of Noah, ‘Ad, and Thamud? What is their fate, and why should we be any different from them?
Pharaoh’s question was not a genuine inquiry seeking knowledge or guidance. Rather, it was a rhetorical challenge laced with mockery and evasion. He thought that by mentioning past nations who disbelieved, he could cast doubt on Moses’ message — as if their disbelief were proof of its falsehood, or as if their fate were unknown and therefore the warning of punishment was uncertain.
The response to this comes in the following verse, where Moses (peace be upon him) answers that the knowledge of those nations is with Allah, recorded in a Book — meaning their deeds and their end are fully known to Allah, and He will judge them with perfect justice. This teaches us that no argument based on the actions of past disbelievers can stand against the truth of Allah’s message.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse reminds us of a timeless tactic used by those who reject the truth: they point to the past to justify their present defiance. But as believers, we must understand that the fate of past nations is not a mystery — Allah has told us in the Qur’an how He destroyed the arrogant and saved the righteous. The Qur’an is full of stories of earlier peoples, not as mere tales, but as lessons and warnings. So when someone asks, "What about those who came before?" — we answer with certainty: their deeds are with Allah, and His justice is absolute. Let this strengthen your faith: no matter how many people reject the truth, the truth remains true, and Allah’s promise to support His believers is unwavering. Take heed from history, and do not let the arguments of the arrogant shake your certainty — for Allah’s knowledge encompasses all, and His word prevails.
